Mandrake lore:

The Mandragora Officinarum, also known as a Mandrake, is a famous plant for its root that has an uncanny human resemblance.

Throughout history, its uses and properties have been highly debated though always highly sought after. From one of its earliest references in Genesis, to its later popularity among the Anglo-Saxons, the mandrake has been rumoured to cure all kinds of ailments: from boils to demons, infertility to melancholy.

Later fables told of the mandrake growing under the gallows of murderers. It was said to be bad fortune to dig up these mandrakes, and if one did, it would emit a shriek that none might hear and live. This particular fable inspired the Mandrake’s presence in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The mandrake root contains highly biologically active alkaloids, responsible for the root’s narcotic, hallucinogenic, and hypnotic effects (a property that made it sought after in Greco-Roman culture). It was appropriate as an anesthetic for surgeries in ancient times. Too high a dose however, could cause sever averse affects, including mania, delirium, and in some cases death.

Thankfully, this little mandrake was uprooted from my own garden. She hasn’t been hanging around any gallows, and so her voice is quite harmless. In fact, she finds most things immensely amusing, and it’s more likely to hear her bubbling up in laughter than shrieking.

This wee little Mandrake is looking for a magizoologist to give her a home.

Creation Details:

This is an original sculpture that I have carefully hand detailed to be as realistic and cute as possible. Many hours have gone into her design and creation. I’ve cast the original, poured in durable resin, trimmed, filled, and sanded the piece, before giving the sculpture a detailed hand painting in quality artist paints so this one is completely unique and original. It has been sealed to maintain paint colour and integrity. The leaves and other soft elements can be gently adjusted, as they have a wire center, however, rough adjusting is not recommended. The piece is finished inside a high quality glass cloche for display, and can be removed if necessary. To keep your mandrake safe (and keep their cries carefully contained) it is recommended to leave her inside her protective dome while on display.

This is an original edition of a limited run design.

Could be well displayed alongside a unicorn horn, your wand collection, an old stack of books, or she could be the first piece to lead you into the magical world of magizoology.

As with any work of art, do not get wet or leave in direct sunlight for extended periods of time. They are durable and should not break, but excessive rough handling or dropping could scratch the paint, please handle with care.
